Celebrate Valentine Responsibly, Prevent HIV- NACA Warns

By Justina Auta
The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has urged Nigerians to
celebrate Valentine’s Day responsibly by taking deliberate steps to prevent HIV
and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Dr Temitope Ilori, Director-General of NACA, made the call in a Valentine’s Day
message issued on Wednesday in Abuja, stressing the need for individuals to
prioritise their health and that of their partners.
Ilori said that while the season was known for expressions of affection and
connection, it was equally important to avoid behaviours that increased
vulnerability to HIV.
“Let love be guided by responsibility. Knowing your status and protecting yourself
and others is a powerful way to show you care,” she said.
She encouraged Nigerians to know their HIV status by getting tested and
encourage their partners to do the same, while also practising safe sex through
consistent and correct use of condoms.
The NACA boss also advised citizens to avoid risky behaviours such as having
multiple sexual partners and engaging in transactional sex, as well as excessive
alcohol or substance use that could impair judgement.
She further urged the public to access HIV prevention, treatment and counselling
services at government health facilities nationwide.
