2027: Political Aspiration May Trigger Resignation Of Four Tinubu`s Ministers

Fresh political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections may trigger a
shake-up in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet, as some ministers reportedly
plan to resign to pursue political ambitions.
According to The Punch on March 7, 2026, at least four Federal Executive Council
members are positioning for state-level contests, particularly in states where
incumbent governors will complete their two terms in 2027.
Ministers Considering Resignation:
Adebayo Adelabu – Minister of Power
Muhammad Ali Pate – Minister of Health and Social Welfare
Yusuf Maitama Tuggar – Minister of Foreign Affairs
Nkeiruka Onyejeocha – Minister of State for Labour
Following the revised INEC electoral timetable, party primaries are scheduled for
April 22 to May 20, 2026; Under Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, political
appointees must resign before participating in party primaries.
Adebayo Adelabu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank and Minister of
Power, is preparing to contest the Oyo State governorship under APC, having
previously run in 2019 and 2023; An aide, Femi Awogboro, confirmed Adelabu’s
ambition but noted only the president can direct him to resign.
Muhammad Ali Pate and Yusuf Maitama Tuggar are reportedly considering the
Bauchi State governorship; Pate is under pressure from supporters to run again,
while Tuggar continues political consultations in the state.
Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour, may return to the National
Assembly. She previously served four consecutive terms in the House of
Representatives for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Abia State.
If these ministers resign, President Tinubu may conduct a mini cabinet reshuffle to
fill the resulting vacancies ahead of the 2027 elections.
